There's a bit of
debate ongoing in the Concord Monitor regarding the efforts of New Hampshire investigators to regain access to DMV data by showing their license at the agency counter (as investigators in many other states can do). New Hampshire tightened privacy laws in the 1990s and subsequently P.I.s seeking DMV records have been required to have a letter from an attorney identifying an open court case in order to access records from the motor vehicle agency. A bill has been proposed that would provide an exemption for P.I.s, following the defeat of a similar bill two years ago. One of the main proponents of the legislation is state representative Dan Dumain of Londonberry, himself a P.I. and former police officer.
