story on the potential expansion of new security measures being considered for recommendation by the EU Committee of Data Protection Authorities. The new guidelines are designed to assist banks prevent fraud and protect privacy (noble goals both). In the UK, the use of databases listing merchants who have had their contracts to accept credit cards terminated has resulted in substantial savings. The Committee argues that expanding the use of such databases throughout Europe could save as much as € 200 million.
